Description
The History of Croquet by DMC Prichard
To many people, the lasting image of croquet is that of a gentle game, played on warm summer days against a background of elegant tea parties. But there is far, far more to it than that.
While it has its leisurely and relaxed side, true croquet is an internationally recognised tournament game that has been in exsitence as such for over 100 years, though its origins go back considerably further. And yet, surprisingly, there has never been a full-scale history of this subtle, skilful and altogether noble game.
This book traces the growth of croquet from its earlier, more frivolous days to the fascinating tactile contest of today. That progress, as the author shows, has not always been smooth, but has survived much controversy and endured through two world wars, involving some of the most eccentric and colourful characters in the annals of any sport.
DMC Prichard is a well known tournament player, and his excellent history has the full cooperation of the Croquet Association. Far from being a dry-as-dust account of some obscure sport, here is an enchanting and highly amusing study of a great and enduring game.
